Many newer vehicles feature infotainment systems, allowing you to listen to your favorite music, audiobooks and podcasts and make calls in emergency situations. Depending on the operating system your phone uses, you can access Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

A car infotainment system, located on your car’s dashboard, is your vehicle’s entertainment hub. In many newer cars, vehicles have touch screens that you can use to control all these functions, rather than from your phone.
All you need to connect your phone is a USB cable or Bluetooth. For Bluetooth connections, you’ll follow the instructions in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Meanwhile, the USB connection simply runs between the port in your car and your phone. Wait until the infotainment system reads your phone, and if capable, you’ll have access to either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, depending on the type of your device.

Apple CarPlay is available on Apple devices, and gives you a safer way to access your apps when you’re on the road. The newest version of Apple CarPlay can suggest directions to places you frequently visit on Apple Maps and use data from text messages, calendar and emails.
Apple CarPlay is simple to use. Once connected, you can access directions with Apple Maps, make phone calls, listen to Spotify or Pandora or stream your favorite podcasts.
One of the best features of Apple CarPlay is dictation. Instead of reaching down to access your phone to write a text message, you can listen to the message audibly and respond with voice to text. However, it’s recommended you only do this when in park to reduce distracted driving.
You can customize settings to alter the apps that show up when connected to your vehicle, such as Audible, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM Radio and Waze. And if you trade in your car, you can go to the CarPlay settings to forget the vehicle. That way, your information doesn’t show up for the new owner.
You can also use Siri to access your favorite song or apps by pressing the microphone or speaker button on your vehicle’s steering wheel. There’s a button on the touchscreen interface that allows you to bypass multiple steps to access the entertainment you want while keeping your eyes on the road.
If you have an Android or Google smartphone, you’ll be able to use Android Auto. Similar to Apple CarPlay, you’ll be able to connect to your vehicle’s infotainment system through a Bluetooth connection or a USB cable.
Once your phone is connected, you’ll be able to access navigation apps like Google Maps. You can also use Google Assistant to access music, receive directions, play podcasts, make phone calls and access weather reports. With navigation apps like Waze, you’ll receive real-time traffic alerts.
Google Assistant also reads your messages aloud so you can keep your focus on the road. You can use its voice assistant to make phone calls, but again, only do this if you’re parked.
You’ll need to download the Android Auto app if your phone is an Android 9 or below, while Android 10s and newer already include Android Auto software.
Many newer vehicles feature Android Auto, Apple CarPlay or both. You can consult your owner’s manual or speak with your local dealer to determine if the vehicle you have or want has these systems. You can also find all vehicles compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on each system’s website.
Tesla doesn’t use either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, as the brand has its own interface. General Motors plans to phase out both systems with its newer gas and electric vehicles and instead use Google’s operating system. With it, you won’t need a cell phone to access shortcuts to apps, receive notifications and play music.
